NEC-SFU Native Basketball Festival 2016

MAY 20th to 22nd 2016

Lorne Davis Complex, Burnaby BC

Background to the Festival

In 2012 and 2013 NEC’s Wellness Warriors program launched its first basketball tournaments in partnership with Musqueam Nation at the Musqueam Community Centre. In October 2014 NEC delivered a third basketball tournament, this time at SFU called the SFU & NEC All Nations Basketball Classic. The All Nations Basketball Classic was a sell-out tournament with three divisions and twenty teams participating from across Western Canada.

With a commitment to creating unique and memorable experiences, NEC and SFU are teaming up to introduce the “NEC-SFU Native Basketball Festival” taking place May 20-22, 2016 at  Simon Fraser University, the Lorne Davis Complex, Burnaby, BC. This exciting event will use the First Nations tradition of friendly competition combined with cultural exhibitions to bring together 500 Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal basketball players, performers, vendors, Elders, volunteers, families and friends.

Playing together with a new team and gradually starting to mesh really well together. Seeing how we have improved has been great. It has been uplifting.

What is the NEC-SFU Native Basketball Festival?

It’s a three-day festival of sport, culture, and community where participants feel a strong sense of connection with friends and family and make new friends with visiting teams.

Festivities will include a youth basketball camp coached by the Head Coach of the SFU Men’s Team; an arts, culture and resource fair; cultural performances; drumming and prizes created by local Aboriginal artists and the livestreaming of games taking place on the feature court by ViaSport Media’s professional production crew.

Inclusivity and a focus on active living is key. There will be opportunities for basketball players of all experience levels and ages to participate in the games through the youth divisions (U18 Boys and Girls), senior men and women’s divisions, Masters Division (+35) and the adult coed division.

We use sport to promote education. By virtue of the Festival being held at SFU and hosted by NEC and SFU we differentiate our event from most other Aboriginal sporting events. The NEC-SFU Native Basketball Festival allows recruitment to be implicit, by introducing post-secondary education to potential prospective students in a non-threatening way.

It’s about active living, education, and families and communities coming together to celebrate the spirit of teamwork, belonging, and pride in Aboriginal culture.

Youth Basketball Camp

We have partnered with the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council and the SFU Varsity Men’s Team to offer two free Aboriginal youth basketball camps on Saturday May 21, 12-2 and 2-4 pm in SFU’s East Gym. The camps are open to youth ages 8-18 and camp registration will be capped at 40 youth per camp. Snacks will be provided and youth will receive a free Festival t-shirt. The camps are open to Aboriginal youth registered in the tournament’s youth divisions in addition to youth not playing in the Festival.  Please note that youth participating in the youth divisions of the Festival will not be automatically registered in the camp and instead need to register for the camp individually through the Partners Council’s online registration form.
